How fast should the pad on these sanders rotate?

The Controlled Finish System (pad brake), on these sanders should limit pad rotation to a maximum speed of 500 rpm while sanding.
If the sander is run with the pad lifted off the work, pad rotation should stop or be very slow. This feature reduces the possibility of damage to the work surface if the sander is placed onto the work while the motor is running.
